Today, the CFO Council launched a development tool for careers in Federal financial management, mycareer.cfo.gov. The result of months of interagency collaboration, the tool provides a roadmap for current and future Federal financial management employees to chart their careers. The roadmap makes clear what competencies are needed to progress and excel as a member of the Federal financial management workforce.
Mycareer.cfo.gov is the cornerstone of the CFO Council’s efforts focused on improving how Government recruits, trains, and retains top talent in financial management — a top priority for the Council. Nine years after the Government Accountability Office identified the financial management workforce as a challenge facing the Government in their survey and report, “Federal Financial Management: Critical Accountability and Fiscal Stewardship Challenges Facing Our Nation,” the community continues to experience critical financial management skill gaps as a record number of federal employees reach retirement age and prepare to leave the workforce, and a contraction as employees leave the government for the private sector. The CFO Council has taken a Government-wide approach to address issues facing the community.
In response to these challenges, the CFO Council convened subject matter experts from across Government to provide resources that enhance the workforce experience. This includes the creation of the CXO Fellows program, updating competency definitions, and providing a roadmap for careers in Federal financial management.
