Prior to joining the DOL, Karen Tekleberhan was the Deputy Director of Operations for the Office of Financial Management, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In this capacity she provided leadership and direction to five divisions in four geographical locations with a staff of nearly 300 employees and contractors responsible for providing financial management services to Homeland Security Departmental Offices, ICE, and four other agencies within the DHS. Prior to DHS, she completed a thirty month tour with the U. S. Peace Corps as the Deputy Chief Financial Officer (CFO). In this role Ms. Tekleberhan was the principal advisor and assistant to the CFO, and directly managed the operations of the OCFO which included overseeing all planning, budgeting, and financial management functions of the agency through seven domestic offices and financial staff in seventy foreign countries. Prior to being the DCFO for the Peace Corps Ms. Tekleberhan was the Director of Cash Accounting for the Financial Management Services, U. S. Department of Treasury. In this capacity she was responsible for leading a variety of activities that impacted the entire community of financial institutions that serve as fiscal agents of the Federal government; maintaining the Federal Government’s Central Summary General Ledger reflecting the receipt, custody, and expenditure of all public monies; and leading efforts to ensure daily monitoring of the Treasury General Account deposits held at the Federal Reserve Banks.
Ms. Tekleberhan is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Master’s degree in General Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She is also a Certified Government Financial Manager, an IRS Enrolled Agent, and a Certified Public Account in the state of Maryland.
